Airport data: Contribute to AirwaySim

Help us make AirwaySim better and even more realistic!

You're invited to help us in the new public project on airport data collection. The aim is to collect accurate and up-to-date information on all airports globally, add various historical events to airports (such as runway extensions) and also to add any airports still missing from the database.

The basis of all this is the Airport Data Contribution Tool which is accessible to all registered members. With this tool users can submit new and correct existing airport data. All data submitted is sent to separate database and verified before taken into use, so editing any game data directly is of course not possible and changes will not affect any of the running games.

The need for updated airport data comes from the City Based Demand system (currently in use with cargo already). In this new demand model the airports itself do not generate any passenger/cargo demand but serve merely as gateways for the demand created by the cities and areas. This fundamental change requires more data and new attributes to airports, and we'll be introducing new details and features related to airports after enough data is collected.

At the same time we're also looking for actual historical data on airport changes. These are for example the details on how runways of each airport were extended in the history. Another historical detail is the change of airport names over the course of history. As you may know, currently the airport data is fixed and based on present day (runways stay always of the same length etc.), but with this data we're looking to add an additional layer of accurate history into the simulation. The data tool can be used to input this data and these features will be built into the simulation after the data collection.
