Staffing Question

Hi all,

Just getting going in BW1 at LHR.  Starting with DC-10s, I have 5 currently with 3 more on order currently.  Having a look at my staffing levels, I am surprised to see I am employing 222 pilots (all Very Large Aircraft) and 586 cabin crew.  For 5 (or 8?) aircraft!  Even accounting for 3 pilots and 8 cabin crew per DC-10, this math adds up to 40 pilots per ac and over 100 cabin crew per ac.  Even if staff is hired in anticipation of my next 3 planes arriving, this would be almost 30 pilots and 70 cabin crew per ac.  I have more than twice the number of staff as the next closest airline (1001 total vs. 437) at LHR and it's killing my profit margin.

Is this normal?  Haven't ever noticed this happening before.  Any thoughts would be very welcome thanks!

9-11 crews per each longhaul aircraft is normal.

220 pilots, with 7x DC-10 => 10.4 crews per plane. (DC-10 requires 3 pilots)

(all planes that have routes scheduled, even if not delivered, are counted to staff requirements)

Interesting I suppose I wasn't considering it in terms of "crews."  So that "1" extra pilot on the DC-10 turns into like 80 more pilots on my payroll since I need +1 in each crew.  Aieee!

When I toyed with IL96M in the late 1990s(a very bad idea. do not), I learned it the hard way : 2 aircraft, 100 pilots(5 pilots per crew). With british salaries. Argh.

Sorry for bargin in, but is there any table showing how much crews are needed for what type/model/kind of a plane? Would help me a lot while planning future fleets
