Airport slot system updated

Updates
  • The system on how airport slot numbers grow has been totally updated. Basis of the update was previewed earlier here.

  • The airport Infrastructure Level is now the basis of all slot numbers. Amount of slots grow only when the infrastructure level grows by airport expansion (apart from game's first years / start-up phase).

  • Airport at infra level 10 has 100 slots/hr while airport at level 1 has 10 slots/hr, and growth between these levels is linear. In other words airport at level 5 has 50 slots/hr. These can be changed by a global modifier in game's settings (i.e game has slots setting at "+50%" globally, and then level 5 airports have 75 slots/hr).

  • New slots will appear only when the aiport expansion project has been completed. All of them are available at the day of completion of the expansion.

  • If the airport is slot-limited, the completion of expansion project will trigger a slot-quota mechanism at that airport. Details and further explanation of this mechanism can be found further down this post.

  • Game launch phase and first years will differ from this basic mechanism. At game start all airport slots are at 40% level and will grow to 100% during the first 1 - 1.5 game years (depending on airport and randomization interval). During this time the slots are made available at random intervals (like currently already).

  • The whole code base on how airport slots are handled during route creation and scheduling has been updated. Functionality and features remain the same, the code has been just reformatted/rewritten since it was very old.

  • Calculation of airport slot costs has been also rewritten and made a bit more simple, with also changes on how costs are factored during game world start (to slow down initial rate of expansion).

  • Added basic technical support for airport curfews that are not on the hour (i.e. "2230-0545").

  • The error messages in route editor for airport curfew errors are improved.

The new slot system is effective in all game worlds.

Slot quotas explained

Additional information about the quota system, to avoid confusions and misunderstandings. The manual will be also updated soon.
  • With the updated slot features we are bringing in the "slot quota" feature into more visible use.

  • This feature has been part of AirwaySim for many years and is nothing new really. Previously it has been only triggered when an airline bankrupts or closes down many routes at an slot-constrained airport (= more than ~90% of daytime slots being used).

  • Since the infrastructure expansion based slot system will now release the airport slots in one go after expansion has completed, it is necessary to limit the take of the slots. This is purely for "fair play" reasons so that no single player can get a hold of all the slots after the expansion and to avoid the need for a situation where players need to sync their watches and set alarms to the exact date when the airport expands and slots are released.

  • Whenever an airport expands and it was slot-constrained before the expansion, a slot quota mechanism is activated for the airport. The actual quota depends on many things but is usually at least 50 new slots for each 5 passed game days. In other words you can schedule 7 new flights flown 7 times a week, and repeat this every 5 game days - so shouldn't be a truly limiting factor for anyone. The quota is valid for a maximum for 120 days after the expansion (2.5 real days with 30min/day game speed), which after the limit is lifted and slots are free to be bought in larger quantities too.

  • The slot quota is also applied during the first game year when number of airport slots grows from 40% to 100%. The quota activates if more than 80% of the daytime slots are being used after each slot increase.

  • The quotas for bankruptcies and route closures remains the same as before and they are cleared within 30 days of the event.

  • The quota is always re-checked when airport slot numbers change (initial game phase or airport expansion), so it might not last for the entire durations mentioned above.

  • The quota system is still partly based on old code intended only for the airline/route closures and will be tuned/improved at some point. Quota is also currently only displayed at the airport slots page but this is also due to some improvements soon. We'll keep an eye on how the things work in the new game world.

Other updates
  • Airport catchment radius for City Based Demand is re-calculated now three times monthly (vs. once previously).

  • Airport service levels for City Based Demand are now calculated twice as often as before (twice weekly vs once previously).

  • New pictures for A319NEO, A320NEO, A321NEO.

  • Manual updated to include the details of the airport infra expansions: https://www.airwaysim.com/game/Manual/Routes/Airport/#Expand

Other fixes
  • In some rare cases aircraft lease termination resulted in loss of the seating configuration, fixed.

  • Route Image did not transfer properly when Berlin's airport closed.

  • One background process of City Based Demand was causing errors and leading to cargo values not being updated, fixed.

  • Schedule conversion between fleet groups had incorrect turnaround time for technical stopovers.

Aircraft scrapping improvements

Updates
  • My Aircraft listing page has now a "mass scrap" option: Select the planes with checkbox and choose 'Scrap aircraft' from the dropdown at the bottom. The mass option does not give you all the financial information the per-aircraft scrapping page does, but it does the job..

  • Scrapping of aircraft is now possible even if the a/c is listed for sale at the used market (a/c can't be already sold of course).

  • Improved some error messages in the scrapping process.

Interface updates (mass actions, settings etc.)

Updates
  • Used aircraft buy/leasing page has now the additional option to install aircraft upgrades (i.e. hushkits) directly upon aircraft purchase.

  • Generally improved the technical basis of My Aircraft "mass actions" (= better code and functionality).

  • Improved the way the success and error messages are displayed when performing these mass actions for aircraft.

  • Added new feature for mass removal of aircraft from long-term storage from My Aircraft listing page.

  • Added new selection when removing aircraft from long-term storage: Additional maintenance [picture below]. This checkbox allows you to tell the system to optionally perform the "next higher" heavy maintenance check (C or D) based on the a/c data. If the storage removal would require only B check to be performed, you may order C check to be done by checking this item (or D check if the system would by default perform only C check). Useful if the next higher check is soon expiring. Works for both single and mass removals.

  • Aircraft can be put into long-term storage while being sold in the used market (either single or mass action). This also removes the a/c from sale.

  • Added the missing scrapping option for aircraft on sale at My Aircraft listing page.

  • As a summary, the following mass actions are currently available to be performed for multiple a/c at once:
    • Rebase aircraft
    • Store aircraft
    • Remove from storage
    • Scrap aircraft
    • Upgrade aircraft

  • Settings page has a new tab "Notification settings" [picture below]:
    • New option available: "Disable all airport slot expiry notifications".
    • E-mail notification settings moved to this tab.
    • Duplicated the lease extension and maintenance message settings also to this tab.

  • Also improved/consolidated some styling icons at the Settings page.

Aircraft, achievement and interface updates

Various miscellaneous changes and tunings around many different features.

Updates
  • Performance calculations for supersonic aircraft (Concorde, Tu-144) improved:
    • The wind effect factor at high cruising levels is significantly smaller (like in real life).
    • The "distance via airways" is now less at these high cruise levels (compared to lower levels for regular a/c), due to less traffic at higher levels and ATC preference given to these a/c near airports.

  • Small adjustments to the fuel performance of Concorde (climb / cruise phases). [affects all new game worlds and also current GW#1 and GW#2]

  • Five new achievements added: "Yearly Cargo", five levels ranging from 100 000 tonnes cargo in a year to 10 000 000 tonnes (measured in kg).

  • Tuning of the airport expansion feature:
    • It can now activate the earliest at 1.5 years after a game world starts (previously already at 0.5 yrs). (the game's launch period of gradual slot increases will last until about 1 - 1.5 yrs)
    • Added three new trigger levels to start the expansion project and also reorganized the priorities between them a bit (to give bigger focus on slot limited airports).

  • Route editor's payload restriction warning box is improved [picture below]:
    • Warnings and information are now color coded. Red means inability to fly the route and green means no restrictions (many times people didn't read the actual text...).
    • Added per-leg details to the type-specific warnings, so you can now see which a/c type and which route leg creates problems for you.

  • Airport curfews (if any) are now displayed at the title section of the route editor.

  • "Percentage of slots used at airports" stat is now called "Percentage of daytime slots used" and shows the slot usage % between 06 and 22.

  • The default selection for region is now "Whole world" when choosing an airport for technical/refuelling stopover.

  • The airport's total transported passenger and cargo amounts are now stored into a long-term database once a year. The data is stored for up to 50 game years. This allows us to create a new "historical trends" chart for the airports in the future.

Minor updates and fixes

Updates
  • Minor tuning of the airport slot costs:
    • Costs of slots are higher for the first one year after an expansion project of infrastructure is completed, if the airport is still somewhat slot restricted even after the expansion (gradually decreasing back to normal costs within the first year). This slows down the immediate rush to get the newly released slots.
    • Tuned some of the game start-up cost modifiers for popular airport slot costs for a slower start at the biggest airports.

  • Added "game time vs real time conversion" tooltip to airport information page's infra expansion data.

  • Updated the automatic maintenance sequence so that C/D checks can now activate immediately the aircraft leaves extra maintenance checks (seat config, upgrades etc.) if they are expired. Previously there was a one day gap (but no risk for fines).

Fixes
  • Fixed incorrect takeoff runway requirement for B720.

  • Sorting aircraft list by engine name at My Aircraft page didn't take into account the additional installed upgrades.

  • Route editor did not display correct detailed payload limitation for routes with single-way techstops.

Revised Game Area front page

The main page of the Game Area section, the one where you select and join the game worlds, has been updated a bit.

The main goal is to provide clear information about particularities of each game world without having to read the long text descriptions or to click any buttons for additional information. The game world icons have been also updated among other minor visual style changes. The layout is now more responsive to different screens and resolutions (on high-res screens you still see the two-column layout and on smaller screen it reverts to one-column listing).

The biggest change is the introduction of the scenario type information boxes that quickly distinguish the overall length and difficulty level of the scenario. These both come in three levels:
  • Length: SHORT, MEDIUM, EPIC
  • Difficulty: EASY, NORMAL, HARD
For example Beginner's World is always "green"/"green" (= short and easy).

Also all the game details and description are visible now without any "expand" or "read more" buttons (since those weren't used anyway).

We'll be making separate announcements of new game world types soon.

Tupolev Tu-204 data update

With the new aircraft performance system we're updating the aircraft database bit-by-bit with updated performance information (once accurate data is available from research, and otherwise time permitting). Data in the new performance model is based on actual flight manuals or other similar accurate & verifiable data.

Fuel usage values for the Tu-204 fleet group have been updated, based on real flight manuals. Previous update (all other data) was done in last December.

Updates
  • Tupolev Tu-204 series data updated:
    • Climb/descent performance and all fuel usage values updated (AirwaySim Performance Model v.2). Update affects all Tu-204 group aircraft.
    • Crew update: All models require now 3 pilots, apart from Tu-204SM.
These changes are effective in all new game worlds launched after today, and also in current games Airline Generations and History and the Future.

Other fixes
  • Route editor did in some cases list aircraft groups that were not allowed to operate the route (too large for the destination airport).

  • Route editor displayed wrong payload limitation information in some cases of tech-stop routes (calculations correct, just wrong display).

  • Route editor's advisor message (too small route etc.) didn't work properly in all cases when editing a route.

  • Eritrea was incorrectly marked as independent before 1993. It is now a state governed by Ethiopia until the independence (retains its name but has Ethiopian flag etc.).

  • Aircraft engine variant launch news displayed the lowest fuel consumption as 9999 if it was over that.

Route editor update for technical stops

Updates
  • Added the ability to remove technical stops from route editor.

  • The "remove techstop" link opens a dialog confirming the action. Upon confirmation it will remove all stops at the current route leg (= you'll have the option to remove techstops from "the way back" or "on the way there"). After confirmation slots, flight times etc. are automatically recalculated.

Other fixes
  • Route Image page default sort order was lost when selecting filter "cargo only" routes.

  • Alliance and airport route map did not show airlines based at each airport at the popup tooltip.

Changes to background systems & minor feature updates

Updates
  • Several technical updates made to structure of the game's airline routes databases. These changes have been done in small increments over this week and consist of modernizations and allowance for some future updates, and is overall a large structural modification to some of the core systems and databases. This will help in building new features and also speeds up some of the background calculation processes quite much (~10% improvement). All game worlds are affected/updated but at this time there are no visible changes to the users yet.

  • Route delays page now displays the 30-day airline punctuality (same time span is used for statistics), and also comparison values between last 7 days and last 14 days.

  • Route maps' airport tooltip link to route planning refined: airline map & country info & alliance map pages link to route planning of the airport clicked (Planning/ZZZZ/), route map of airport other than your base links to the route from said airport to clicked airport (Planning/ZZZZ/YYYY/), route maps of any of your base airports link to route planning from that base to clicked airport (Planning/XXXX/YYYY/), route map of other airline than yours links to the route from that airline's HQ to clicked airport (Planning/WWWW/YYYY/).

Fixes
  • Route planning page did not in some cases show the flight's pax capacity if some seats were manually being blocked from sale.

  • Fixed a case where Route Image did not transfer to new airport when your base closed. Happened only in a rare case where your base downgraded to a secondary airport, another airport closed totally and at the same time a new airport opened in the city to partly replace these two.

Aircraft data changes

Work is in progress to update some aircraft cabin configuration features, and at the same time the aircraft data has been generally updated with some minor changes.

Updates
  • Tupolev Tu-124 fleet is now size class "large". (Alone Tu-124 would be considered "medium" but since it's a clear development of Tu-104 and predecessor of Tu-134 (both "large"), it makes sense to classify Tu-124 in the same group.)

  • Embraer EMB-120 fleet is now size class "medium". (Was "small", but as 30-seater it's more closely matched to for example 33-seater Saab 340 which is also "medium").

  • Baade 152 fleet is now size class "large". (Better represents the aircraft's size in the era.)

  • Avro C102 Jetliner max passenger capacity is updated to 50. Aircraft also requires now three pilots.

  • All aircraft models include now (internally used) values that determine the length and width of the passenger cabin. These values will be used by the new cabin configuration systems/features (to be previewed later on in more detail).
These date changes are effective only in any future game worlds.

Changes to cargo calculations

Fixes
  • A demand allocation bug has been fixed in the City Based Demand system driving the cargo figures. It appeared in cases where two or more airports were competing of the same demand and there were flights to all of the airports involved. In such case the overall Actual Demand on the route was lower than it should have been.

  • You will see changes in the Actual Demand on many routes, usually the demand goes upwards. The Potential Demand might also change slightly downward but in 99% of the cases will stay where it has been.

  • The update does not completely eliminate the issue but should solve the biggest part of the issue. The fine details will be possibly changed with a larger update to the system later on ("v.2.0").

Aircraft data updates

With the new aircraft performance system we're updating the aircraft database bit-by-bit with updated performance information (once accurate data is available from research, and otherwise time permitting). Data in the new performance model is based on actual flight manuals or other similar accurate & verifiable data.

Let L-410/420 fleet total update
  • Let L-410/420 fleet group data updated (affecting all models):
    • Climb/descent performance and fuel usage of all L-410/420 models updated (AirwaySim Performance Model v.2).
    • Updated aircraft descriptions.
    • Updated aircraft pictures.
    • Range data updated for all models.
    • Weight data updated for all models.
    • Runway requirements updated for all models.
    • Production launch/end dates updated for all models.

Model-specific updates for Let L-410/420 fleet
  • Let L-410A:
    • Passenger capacity increased to 19.

  • Let L-410M:
    • Passenger capacity increased to 19.

  • Let L-410MA:
    • Name changed from L-410AM to L-410MA (both variations were used but this is clearer since it's an upgrade from L-410M).
    • Passenger capacity increased to 19.

  • Let L-410UVP:
    • Passenger capacity decreased to 15.

  • Let L-410UVP-E9:
