Dynamic airports (airport size classification update)

This feature has been previewed earlier here and it is now live in all game worlds!

    • The airport size classification system has been updated fully. The old and fixed 5-step level system is replaced with a dynamic and responsive classification.

    • The size classification comes now in two values: Traffic Level and Infrastructure Level, both have 10 levels (1 - 10).

    • These values affect all the costs and operational details of the airports, such as airport fees, office rents, amount of delays etc. Already previously the airport size class (1-5) has done all these but now the system is more fine-grained and dynamic.

    • Making airports more dynamic is one very important component of the City Based Demand system. The aim is to allow players to truly grow their operations and use airports they would not necessarily normally use. Making the airports dynamic is a part of this process.

    • At the first step the changes visible to players are rather small, the new airport size indicators and some new search tools, but in the background a lot has changed. This update has been prepared already for a long time but now the first stage is public with the class system being replaced.

    • The old size classification (1-5) is still retained and used to narrow airport selection for game worlds (e.g. some game worlds may have only large airports). So you may still sometimes see this classification displayed for example in the game details screen.

    • Traffic Level (1 - 10):

      • Traffic level measures how busy the airport is. This is based on the actual operations of player's airlines. Busy airports have higher operation fees and higher probabilities for delays for example

      • This value is directly relative on how much passengers and cargo has been transported from that airport by the players. Fly more passengers => Airport Traffic Level increases.

      • Traffic level affects directly the various operational costs at the airports, including partly to slot costs, as well as to flight delays due to airport congestion/size.

      • Value is calculated from the total number of passengers transported in previous/current year and compared to all other airports. The division into the ten classes is not linear but instead only the highest 1% of all airports in terms of passenger numbers are classified as "level 10", and the next 1.25% at "level 9", next 1.5% at "level 8" and so forth with the most quiet 30% being at "level 1".

      • Traffic class level updates twice a year, January and July. At the start of the new game world it is based on the fixes statistical data of the airport database.

      • This classification may change up to two steps at one time, up or down (i.e. from level 8 to level 6).

    • Infrastructure Level (1 - 10):

      • Infrastructure level measures the availability of facilities at the airport (such as apron and terminal capacity).

      • It also regulates the allowed aircraft sizes able to fly to this airport: Airports with Infra level 1 are capable of handling "Small aircraft" and "Medium aircraft". Airports with Infra level 2 are capable of handling "Small aircraft", "Medium aircraft" and "Large aircraft". Airports with Infra level 3 and higher can accept all aircraft sizes. (note; special cases such as London City might be more restrictive but these are the basic rules).

      • Infrastructure level does not change unless the airport decides to build an expansion when the airport is near its capacity [this is not yet modeled but will be added on future updates].

      • The initial infra level of each airport corresponds to the fixed size value set for each airport in our master database (the same as the old 1-5 size class system). So at the start of the game world the infra level is never higher than 5; the airports will then grow from there if there is a need for that.

      • Infra level affects for example office rent costs, slot costs and amount of slots. So when the infrastructure is expanded the airport will have better facilities and amount of slots will increase.

      • This classification may change only up, and one step at a time.

    • What has changed in economic calculations:

      • Office rent: Depends now on the Infrastructure Level (among other values that have not changed). Progress of the rent is linear between size classes.

      • Route delays: Flight delays based on airport size depend now the Traffic Class. Thanks to the 10-step scaling the smaller and mid-sized airports are now less likely to create delays. For traffic classes 9 and 10 the delay probability is increased (~ +10%).

      • Airport slot costs: Calculation has been changed to incorporate the new metrics and before infrastructure levels grow you might see slightly reduced slot purchase costs.

      • There are still other cost updates pending, but the changes are done gradually in order to minimize the impacts to airlines (since there will be minor cost fluctuations; mostly downwards).

    • What you will see after the update:

      • The new 'Infrastructure level' and 'Traffic level' indicators in airport pages.

      • Destination selector / search for Open New Route page updated with slightly different formatting. Added also 'Infrastructure level' and 'Traffic level' searches, with the filtering possibility.

      • Traffic level of all airports is being calculated from actual statistics.

      • Infrastructure level has been converted from existing fixed statistics with some conversions applied. Highest infra level is currently 8 (depends on game world and airport size).

      • Techical stops are now allowed at all airports (limiting them based on traffic size class would have not been feasible since it is a variable value).

      • Your office rent will change slightly depending on your base airport, -10% to +5%.

      • Depending on the airports you operate to the amount of delays due to airport congestion will change, most likely will reduce a bit.

      • 'Base level' bar is also updated visually at Base Airports page to match the new styling (no other changes here).

    Updates and bug fixes

All updates listed here (excluding the aircraft data changes) are effective in all game worlds.

    Updates

    • New rule to aircraft scrapping: Aircraft must have been delivered to your airline more than 1 year ago before it can be scrapped.

    • The aircraft size factor calculation for routes (i.e. when aircraft is determined to be too small for a route) uses now a different metric (max capacity, instead of average capacity), since it eliminates the variation between factory-default seat configurations. You may see slightly different route sales results because of this change.

    • Allowed more 'island hopping' routes (where the minimum route distance rules do not apply): PGSN-PGWT, PGUM-PGRO, TJVQ-TJSJ, TJVQ-TJIG, TJPS-TJSJ, TJVQ-TIST, TJVQ-TISX, TNCB-TNCC (and the return sectors of course too).

    • Added a filter of 'unscheduled aircraft' to My Aircraft listing page.

    • Route distance is now shown in the 'Airport destinations and timetables' view.

    • Message notification of route management's price update is changed (no automatic scrolling).

    • Added cargo type description mouseover tooltips to route editor.

    • London City operation rules changed so that Bombardier's CSeries CS100 (& ER) can operate there, but CS300 can not.

    • Updated cargo pricing factors.

    • Minor changes to cargo handling fees.

    • Minor tweak to airport landing fees.

    • The 2017 new flag of Mauritania is added.

    • Tupolev Tu-144 seating capacity updated to 140.

    Fixes
    • Improved error message in 'easy start' wizard mode when game did not have enough used aircraft available.

    • Improved the speed in 'easy start' wizard when it first searches for suitable airports.

    • Airport size filter did not work for route planning page (but did work on route opening page), fixed.

    • 'Easy start' wizard did not always assign cargo capacity to aircraft, fixed.

    • Cargo market share works now in airport information pages.

    • Minor fix to fuel price predictions.

    • Scaling of transported cargo chart improved.

    • Base airports page listing selector improved for long airport names / many bases.

    • In some cases the aircraft security asset for loans took too long to be released, fixed.

    • Charts in income and cashflow sheets displayed sometimes the data of another base than what was selected (due to caching).

    • Fixed aircraft 'max capacity' filter to exclude cargo aircraft when "<20pax" capacity is chosen (since there is 'cargo only' filter already).

    Fixes and minor changes

    Updates

    • Cargo handling fee added as own item in income statement. Shown as "Ground handling" and "Ground handling (Cargo)": the normal ground handling covers the fees of normal aircraft turnaround at the ramp, while cargo fees are the extra fees for also handling the cargo. For all-pax flights you see cargo handling as 0$ and for all cargo flights you see expenses in both items. Both pax & cargo flights again both items are charged but the regular handling fee is larger than for cargo-only flights since there's more to do.

    • Cargo aircraft launch news have now the cargo capacity info (instead of "0 pax capacity").

    Fixes
    • Improved the effect of aircraft speed on routes.

    • Fixed a Route Image related bug where in some cases cargo values affected the sales of passenger seats (was only visible within certain RI range and certain demand range).

    • Fixed an error where missing staff group can lead to Error 500 pages due to missing 'staff effectiveness' value.

    • Easy start wizard failed in some cases without any error message, possible memory management issue - improved/fixed.

    • Seat configuration menu was shown for cargo-only aircraft at used aircraft purchase negotiation page.

    • When changing seat configuration the cargo capacity of existing routes was sometimes reset to zero.

    • Game start used aircraft generation adjusted: Minimum age of airplanes to appear there is now 2.5yrs (previously 4.9yrs). (nb. other than this there are no differences in game start vs. later stages on what gets picked to the aircraft market from the storage pool)

    • Game start money growth adjusted: The money factor does not change for the first 30 game days, which after it starts to grow slowly (previously growth started from day 1 with a slow rate). (example: 0 days to the game at largest class airport starting cash is $3mil, 30 days in it is still $3mil, at 60 days it is $3.3mil, and at 120 days $3.9mil - but it is not so simple, there are other factors too).

    • Route image values are now shown at Route Information (the detailed route data) page.

    • "Total population" and "GDP per capita" are now shown in Country Information page (for games where City Based Demand is enabled for pax or cargo calculations).

    • "Relative salary level" is shown in Country Information page (for games where City Based Demand is enabled for pax or cargo calculations). This is the factored generic staff salary level for the entire country, and all your employee wages are based on this - can be used to compare staff costs between countries.

    • "Countries governed" are also listed in the Country Information page (check for example UK's country page).

    • Added some more sublinks to the Country Information page for better information cross-reference.

    Fixes
    • Oldest airlines statistic was displayed twice in stats page in games with cargo enabled.

    • Aircraft scrapping link was not always active, fixed.

    Various minor fixes

    Updates
    • Rule change to game start: Players are only allowed to order two used aircraft during the first game day. New aircraft orders are disallowed until the game clock starts. (This is changed mainly to protect new players from making bad/expensive decisions, and it has also caused some confusions in the past.)

    Fixes
    • World event demand bar was not always shown on route planning pages (display issue).

    • Improved cargo demand chart bar display in case of 0 cargo demand.

    • Airline information page's financials did not count cargo handling into totals.

    • Aircraft models listing page showed data of conversion models for too long (i.e. DC-3 data shown still in year 2000), fixed.

    • Firing staff manually did not work correctly in some rare cases (database error).

    • 'Reset prices' link was sometimes missing at price management page, fixed.

    • Route editor had incorrect payload limit calculation in techstop routes with certain rare combination.

    • Tu-134 fleet group fuel consumption adjusted (lower). [new games only]

    • IL-62 turnaround time adjusted. [new games only]

    • Small fix to background process of calculating the new 'traffic size' levels for minor airports.

    • Improved game creation's initial demand calculation (memory issues).

    • Fixed game creation's incorrect aircraft creation sequence (cargo conversion models were in too high proportion).

    Minor changes

    Updates
    • Airline Information page has now a subsection under Aircraft fleet tab: "Latest aircraft deliveries".

    • Aircraft History listing shows the actual selling prices of player-to-player aircraft transactions.

    • Logic for demand calculation in airport transfers (old airport closing -> new airport opening) is changed. The old airport demand is now first simply copied to the new airport, and in later stages of the calculation the system will then update the demand based on the new airport (for pax demand the results will be "hard-counted" at ~1200 the next day but for cargo the changes will be gradual over weeks/months; since the cargo demand does not have sudden jumps when airport changes like the pax demand might have in the old demand system). This also eliminates the ~15 minute real-time period when new airport does not have any figures to show yet.

    • Minor updates to airline starting money and airport slot price calculation when game is in progress.

    Fixes
    • In some cases B check was already made on the first game day, this is usually unnecessary and it is disabled unless player specifically asks the system to do it immediately.

    • Aircraft database id was shown instead of MSN id on certain aircraft seat configuration sub-page in case no registration was set for aircraft.

    Minor fixes

    Fixes
    • When cancelling an order for new aircraft you will lose the downpayment (or part of it), but this was not a tax-deductible loss in income statement if the aircraft was bought (for leases it was correctly there); it has been now added (= the money "lost" in cancellation process is counted as an one-time expense, under 'Aircraft lease fees' for leases and under 'Loss on sold aircraft' for new a/c purchases).

    • Taxable income calculation was erroneous in a rare case, leading to past losses being undeductible; fixed.

    • Fixed base rule cases for Hong Kong and Macau; UK/Portugese airlines cannot be based there anymore after China takes over the areas.

    • Corrected the alliance fee text description to talk about total revenue (= incl. cargo), instead of total ticket income.

    • Maximum cargo price in some parts of interface was $9999, increased.

    • Transfer of demand values when new airport opens was in some rare cases incorrect (demand did not move to new airport opening).

    • Aircraft cargo conversion maintenance could be cancelled, was not supposed to be possible and that feature is removed (normal C/D can still be cancelled).

    • Erroneous data entry fixed, B707-3xx series was convertible into B727-100F.

    • Aircraft cargo conversion duration calculation was incorrect in some cases (was too long).

    • Fokker 28 max seat capacity updated to 70 for all variants [only for new games].

    Feature Updates

    • Improved the new user advisor:

      • Added advisor warning messages for new aircraft ordering page. Warns when you are about to order aircraft that are too large for your base, too noisy (some engine variants, or all of them) or if your airline is very young when you should still check for used a/c.

      • Better warning text of noise regulations for used aircraft.

    • Detailed cargo load factor information now shown at Manage Routes listing page.

    • Added checker to base airport opening page: cannot open base if your alliance member is based there.

    • Dynamic new aircraft pricing improved with pricing logic based on aircraft size class (larger aircraft need less orders to drive the price up, and vice versa). Price logic includes now also a "middle-point" where price starts to move back towards the nominal value if there are "somewhat many" orders (previously it could move up or down only, if there were many or just few orders).

    • Added aircraft price advisor to new aircraft pages (to indicate where the dynamic pricing is currently, expensive or cheap, and it has 7 different steps/messages).

    • Added icons next to new/used aircraft price advisor text.

    Fixes
    • Max seating capacity of DC-9-21 corrected to match that of DC-9-15. [only for new games]

    • Balancing staff between bases did not always work correctly, fixed.

    • Small fix to aircraft editing process.

    • Route seat blocking minimum threshold adjusted slightly.

    • Minor tuning to ticket & cargo pricing factors.

    • Several typos fixed.

    Aircraft update

Aircraft database of current Game Worlds #1, #2 and #3 have been updated.

All aircraft models that have been added to master aircraft database since these game worlds have started have now been added to these running games. This means mostly the inclusion of the latest batches of cargo aircraft (but also some other models like DC-8-70s conversions). So each of these three main games have now the full and complete selection of every a/c model in the AirwaySim database.

Any data of any existing aircraft already in the database is not changed, so you may see different fuel usage or runway performance values for similar cargo and non-cargo models of the same fleet. (it's not a good idea to change the specs of any models already in use by players)

Please note that it will take several game months for the dynamic aircraft pricing to stabilize to correct levels for these newly added models, so at first their prices may differ from previous models in the fleet group.

Similar update rounds will be done in the future when more aircraft are added.

    Map update (part 1)

    Updates

    • Part of the airport and route maps have been replaced with a new system. Due to a change in Google's pricing we will have to drop their mapping system to an alternative solution.

    • The Airport Information and Route Planning page static (non-zoomable) maps have been replaced with a in-house built mapping system.

    • This mapping module is part of another project of ours and it will be used in AirwaySim on trial basis for now and we'll make the final decision of the map provider soon (since we also need the interactive/clickable maps).

    • The new maps have visually a bit nicer layout, and they do not have the country names / borders (since they would be incorrect in the early era anyway). Since they are generated on our server and you might see them load a tad slowly at first but once the database is built the loading will be instant. This is the first full deployment of the map unit so some issues might still be present.

    Other updates

    • Cargo features are now included in Game World #2 (see game sub-forum for details).

    Fixes
    • Minor adjustments to cargo price factors.

    • Fixed wrong DC-8-50 series conversion setting.

    • Fixed B787-9 wrong first delivery date.

    • Fixed some erroneous data baseline values for Game World #2.

    Map update (minor)

    Updates

    • The static airport and route maps now show the correct geopolitical (land) borders for each year of the game.

    • Border changes are based on the actual real-world data and happen on the actual dates (= same date as the country changes you see in world news). So you will see the map borders change when Germany unifies and so on. Below is the airport map of the same airport from 1980 and 2030. (note; the changes are not yet all visible immediately as the background caching system is not yet responding to these but will be updated soon)

    • Changes are modelled all the way to 1970, but not prior that (did not have time as 1950-1970 in Africa was a mess with so many changes and different colonies/borders that it would take ages to research and draw the borders).

    • Improved the performance of the maps system at the same time (slight decrease in resolution and code changes).

    Map update (part 2)

    Updates

    • Second part of the map update is live with new aircraft range maps and new country airport maps.

    • These maps use the second part of the map technology as these are the "interactive" maps that are scrollable, zoomable etc. Basically technically just the same as the outgoing googlemaps (like with the "static" maps too, same features).

    • The map system is under development and main focus is to first just replace all the maps with the new system (due to cost (and schedule) reasons this has to be done quite quickly, meaning the new map system is not 100% done) and we'll follow on with improvements and new features later on. Visual look is also partly incomplete (using the default marker icons etc.). The interactive map tiles are missing the geopolitical land borders but they will be added later on. And if the system can work nicely and without too much of lag the city names, country names and other such details will be added too. Also the previously introduced "static" maps will be improved and/or replaced with these "interactive" maps, server performance (etc.) permitting, as they'll allow more data to be displayed (which is useful for city based demand). Feedback and ideas on maps are more than welcome!

      • Boeing 767-200SF [cargo conversion]

      • Cessna 208A Caravan [pax version]

      • Cessna 208A Cargomaster [cargo version, convertible from pax version 208A]

      • Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster [cargo version, convertible from pax version 208B]

      • Cessna 208B Grand Caravan EX [pax version]

      • Cessna 208B Super Cargomaster EX [cargo version, convertible from pax version 208B EX]

      • Fairchild SA227-AT Expediter [cargo version, convertible from pax Metro III]

      • Fairchild SA227-AT Expediter 23 [cargo version, convertible from pax Metro 23]

      • Fairchild SA227-DC Metro 25 [pax version, convertible from earlier Metros]
(please note #1; the fuel usage and runway performance of these new models may differ from the old models in database; did some database format cleanup at the same time and these updates are not affected to old models in existing games, but will take effect in any new games)
(please note #2; due to the limitations of the conversion system only one engine variant for each conversion model is allowed and this causes some issues with the B747s that traditionally have had dozens of engine variants)

    Fixes
    • Beechcraft 1900C / 1900D runway requirements updated. [only for new games]

    • A340-500/-600 cargo capacity updated. [only for new games]

    B747 update (part 2)

    Updates
    • For updated/new aircraft data we're now changing the database so that the "better" engine and weight options are not all always available when the aircraft is launched. For example B747-100/-200 series will get new engine (and thus new weight) variants over several years. This has been already supported technically but most of the data has been missing; it will be added when ever other updates are done to any particular aircraft.

    • Boeing 747-200 data updated: [only for new games]

      • Renamed as 747-200B (the pax version designator).

      • Runway requirements updated. (higher)

      • New upgrade option added: Extended Range Fuel Tanks (for additional fuel capacity/range). (Oct 1973)

      • New engine options added: Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7 (baseline engine; -7A moved as option appearing on Dec 1970), General Electric CF6-50E (Aug 1972), General Electric CF6-50E1 (Nov 1974), Rolls-Royce RB211-524B2 (Jun 1975), Pratt & Whitney JT9D-70A (Sept 1977). Updated the launch dates of all other engine variants. Total of 13 engine variants for this model!

      • Updated the specifications of all engine and weight variants. (changes to ranges and fuel usage)

    • Boeing 747SP data updated: [only for new games]

      • Runway requirements updated. (lower)

      • New upgrade option added: Extended Range Fuel Tanks (for additional fuel capacity/range). (Mar 1975)

      • New engine options added: Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7 (baseline engine; -7A moved as option), General Electric CF6-50E, General Electric CF6-50E1 (Nov 1974), General Electric CF6-50E2 (Oct 1976), Rolls-Royce RB211-524D2 (Dec 1979), Pratt & Whitney JT9D-70A (Sept 1977), Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7Q (Apr 1978), Pratt & Whitney JT9D-7R4 (Jan 1979). Updated the launch dates of all other engine variants. Same engine variants as -200B.

      • Removed General Electric CF6-45A2 and General Electric CF6-45B2 engines.

      • Updated the specifications of all engine and weight variants. (changes to ranges and fuel usage)
