Aircraft management function updates, production line dynamic changes and other bugfixes

Updates
  • Changes to aircraft storage features:
    • Added ability to convert aircraft (e.g. to a freighter) when it is in long-term storage. The conversion dialog has also an optional checkbox to remove the aircraft from storage at the same time, and is checked by default (less clicking). [see picture]

    • Aircraft seat configuration can be changed while a/c is in long-term storage. With this change all pages under "Configure Aircraft" section show also the stored planes and they are included in the totals.

    • Upgrading of aircraft (winglets, hushkits etc.) is now also possible while a/c is in long-term storage. Actions work from the aircraft details page or as multi-action from the listing page of all aircraft.

    • During the time any of these upgrades/maintenance actions are in progress the a/c can be removed from the storage normally (the maintenance time is extended according to what works the storage removal needs).

  • Changes to aircraft production line dynamics:
    • Dynamic production line closure is made a bit less dynamic by disallowing the prod.line closure before the aircraft has reached the corresponding real-life production end date.

    • Timer of system's dynamic production line closing mechanism activation for new game worlds is changed from 12 months to 24 months. Before this time has elapsed the system does not close down any production lines.

    • Upon creation of a new game world the production lines can't be at "is about to close soon" status. They are open until further (or then closed prior the game's start date)

  • Aircraft upgrading (winglets, hushkits etc.) are now displayed at the 'Aircraft History' page.

  • Aircraft model conversion (e.g. from pax to freighter) now keeps the pre-installed additional aircraft upgrades (e.g. winglets), if the same upgrade is available for the new model too.

  • Alliance pricing limits for used aircraft are now also effective when leasing aircraft (not just when buying).

Fixes
  • All values of Balance Sheet did not move correctly when HQ airport was relocated.

  • Game area listing did not show the game icon for mentored game worlds.

  • Cargo demand display for world events did not always show up correctly.

  • Route seat oversupply warning did not trigger a proper internal value, preventing the player's mass action to correct the oversupplies from working.

  • Fixed a price calculation error when editing a new aircraft order and changing only the pre-payment amount.

  • Fixed incorrect B757 production line's dynamic ending configuration.

Changes to cargo calculations

Fixes
  • Another update has been made to the cargo demand number calculations of the City Based Demand system. The previous update a month ago created some unwanted side effects and this update addesses those issues.

  • The change fixes the issue where the Actual Demand was displayed as too high even though no airlines were flying on the route. It also corrects the way on how demand for overlapping airports is calculated, since the demand was also displayed too high on some cases where two or more airports overlapped and shared the same demand.

  • The update is effective in all current and future game worlds. For all currently running games the update is introduced gradually: The system does calculations with the updated (11/2019) and non-updated (10/2019) versions and compares the numbers, and initially chooses the higher of these two. Over the next month or two the balance is moved gradually towards the new version. This gives time to react to the changes in the environment.

  • If the performance of our background systems permit, a larger update ("v.2.0") to make the calculation of the demand from overlapping airports even more accurate is in the plans.

Government subsidies and incentives for fuel prices and aircraft purchases

A new major feature has been added to make the operation of early era Soviet aircraft more desirable and to better model the effects of state-controlled economy. Of course modelling the communist state-run system in full realism is not possible or desirable here, but this change will encourage towards more realistic fleet planning in the early era.

  • Government subsidies and incentives: This new feature allows the governments to issue financial benefits for airlines using aircraft produced in their country.

  • In other words if you are based in the Soviet Union and also fly aircraft made in the Soviet Union, the government will pay a large part of your fuel bill and give big discounts for new aircraft purchases (up to 20-30%).

  • If you are based in other friendly country, such as Cuba, you will get similar benefits for flying Soviet aircraft (up to 10-20%).

  • Total of about 40 countries are involved between 1950 and 1992 (depending on their political status).

  • All these communist subsidies end when the Soviet Union collapses (end of 1991). Some other countries may leave this scheme earlier when their political situation changes.

  • Technically the system is also able to create similar discounts and benefits for any other country or aircraft model, but the western goverment subsidies for "buying local" are not planned to be modeled at this time.

  • Discounts are possible from the fuel bill paid, and from new aircraft purchases from the manufacturer (not for leases and not for used aircraft purchases).

  • Discounts vary between 0-30% depending on your HQ country / airline location. The highest discount of 30% from fuel bill and 20% from aircraft prices is received when you are based in the Soviet Union and purchase aircraft made in Soviet Union.

  • The available discounts are shown at the "base airport finder" tool when you start your airline and choose the HQ airport. They are also visible at the aircraft ordering page and individual aircraft information pages.

  • The discounts apply only if your HQ airports in the country qualifying for the discounts. Opening an additional base in such country does not qualify for discounts (comes to play mainly in case of a special game world where there are no real-life political restrictions for expansions).

  • The manual has been updated: https://www.airwaysim.com/game/Manual/Routes/Airport/#Government

This update is live and active in all game worlds.

Better fuel usage monitoring

Updates
  • Office and Routes pages have a new chart "Total fuel usage" showing the actual weekly total fuel usage in kg/lbs for your airline.

  • Route information page's expanded statistics now show the actual fuel usage in kg/lbs for each sector and each day.

  • Dashboard now shows the Operating profit / loss (and other more meaningful figures will be added later on too).

  • The airport infrastructure expansion feature is fine-tuned with the aim to make the infra expansions from level 1 to level 2 more frequent.

  • Grouping of comparison values for different averages (such as Load Factor, revenue and fuel usage) for Dashboard and Routes pages is now the same as in Office page. The value "last week" means the totals from previous full week (Mo-Su) and "week before" are the same values from a full week before that (current ongoing week not relevant).

  • Passenger distribution for Baghdad airport updated to make the Iraq war effect smaller. [only for new games]

  • Berlin Brandenburg airport opening date updated to late 2020. [only for new games]

Fixes
  • New aircraft pre-launch system did not respect the player's chosen order between different models within the same new a/c order when allocating production slots.

  • Updating a/c seat configuration while a/c in long-term storage caused erroneous aircraft technical condition %.

  • Calculation of monthly game statistics had a memory error; fixed.

Minor interface changes and fixes

Updates
  • Aircraft information page's "Conversion and upgrade" section now lists the costs of each conversion/upgrade. (n.b. the conversion cost shown here for reference is based on new/100% condition aircraft; if your a/c is older the cost might be higher)

  • Aircraft area main overview page now shows the costs of upcoming C/D checks for each aircraft.

  • Aircraft launch news for cargo aircraft now also show the max payload (kg/lbs).

  • Added a backlink to My Aircraft page from Aircraft History page for own aircraft.

  • Updated the max passenger capacity for DHC-8-300 aircraft: -300/-300A/-300B at 52 pax, -300E at 56 pax. [only for new games]

  • Updated the max passenger capacity for Dornier 328-110: 36 pax. [only for new games]

  • Updated the max passenger capacity for Concorde: 144 pax. [only for new games]

Fixes
  • Adjusted the calculation for secured loans.

  • "New aircraft operator" achivement was incorrectly calculating the a/c average age.

  • Added a missing fleet filter association to one of Manage Route's destination view links.

City Based Demand for Cargo v.2.0

This is a major update to the background systems and calculations driving the City Based Demand system, currently in use with cargo.

The main objective for this update has been to improve the system technically and remove any remaining issues the City Based Demand system still had. This means very large portions of the code have been re-written and the mechanisms have been extensively tested.

At this stage there are NO changes to the route planning interface yet. These will follow later on and are in planning - this update is purely of technical nature.

This update will be active in all game worlds starting from tomorrow's Euro Challenge. At this time a decision has not yet been made if it will be implemented also in other active game worlds since the demand figures / destinations will be somewhat different.

Highlights:
  • The demand now behaves correctly in a multi-city environment (multiple airports sharing the demand in both departure and arrival area).

  • The demand figures are updated now 4 times as often as previously, once every week. The demand is more reactive to player's moves and route changes.

  • Generally made the system "better and smarter". ;)

  • Improved performance and management of the background systems.

Variable corporate tax rates

Updates
  • The corporate income tax rates are now variable and based on the game year.

  • The tax rates change on 1st of Jan on every year and the changes are posted in the World News at dashboard. The current tax rate can be always also seen at the Country Information page and at the Income Statement page.

  • Data is based on real-life information but is currently available from 2003 onwards only (if someone wants to dig for historical archives, let me know).

  • The system correctly calculates the taxes carried over previous years with the possible previous tax rate.

  • Note that AirwaySim's accounting is based on weeks, so in some cases you might see the date being for example year 2019 but the income sheet is still updated for year 2018 for a few days before the actual first week of 2019 begins. The tax system takes this also into account and uses the tax rate of that year.

The new tax rates for each country (2019 data) are effective on any new game worlds. The changes to tax rates based on real history are effective on all game worlds (due to this change you might see different tax figures than you expected during the next game year - if this causes any financial issues, please let me know).

N.B. The tax rates in the first screenshot are examples (not actual figures). The lower screenshots shows the functionality of change in tax rate and taxes paid during two different years.

Here is a list of the changes in tax rates in year 2019 (AirwaySim's current / old tax data [originally collected around year 2009] vs. the new data):

New dynamic airport map with City Based Demand data

Updates
  • The airport map at Airport Information pages is replaced with a new map.

  • The map is dynamic (zoomable, scrollable) with selectable optional data.

  • By default the map shows the location of the airport but you can view additional City Based Demand data when you choose the additional data from the layers selector at the top-right corner of the map. The current data layers available are "Other airports" and "Squares".

  • The "Other airports" selector will show you all the other airports in the region competing of the same demand and catchment range radius of the airports.

  • All of the airport pins are clickable and will show you more details of the airport.

  • The "Squares" selection will show you the background data from the demand system's world areas. Understanding and viewing this data is purely optional and the data is made visible only for more detailed analysis of the origin of the demand.

  • Each of the world areas ("squares") on the map are also clickable for further information. This shows the specifications of the area, such as population and other properties. Note that the levels (1-10) of each area property (such as "tourism activity") are relative within the same country only (a level 10 in tourism level in country A does not mean the same thing as in country B). But as noted, this info is only for your general interest and it is by no means required to click through these world areas and look into their values.

  • This new map and the new layer features are very helpful for your competition and route analysis, since it allows you to see a general overview which airports compete with your base. In the future the route planning page maps will be expanded with City Based Demand data too.

  • Further details in the manual: https://www.airwaysim.com/game/Manual/Routes/Demand/

Other Updates
  • The Infrastructure and Traffic size classes of airports are now displayed at the "Easy Start" wizard page.

  • The Airport Information page is slightly re-organized due to the new maps. The airline information at this page shows a bit more data than before. At the same time the 'passenger destinations' pie chart is removed as being redundant in the future.

  • New aircraft delivery message now links directly to the new aircraft's info page.

  • Mapping systems updated to the latest version. (IE11 is no longer fully supported by aircraft range maps.)

Fixes
  • Fixed a gross error in CBD population growth calculations: The population growth of each world area was 12x too large (total countrywide population growth was correct). Fix was implemented within CBD v.2.0 update.

  • The "Easy Start" wizard mode did not always respect the airport's infrastructure size based aircraft size limits.

  • Fixed the "Full House" achivement so that only pax/combi aircraft are counted when calculating the Load Factor.

  • Balance sheet did not calculate the aircraft you had leased out which the lessor had put into long term storage into your total assets at Flight equipment row.

  • Fixed wrong airport configuration for London City's allowed aircraft models in History & Future game world.

  • Adjusted the wrong specifications for KSTS (Sonoma) airport [only for new games].

Minor changes and fixes

Updates
  • The master database jet fuel price index is updated with new historical data from 2016-2019. (n.b. Most games use a customized fuel price setup so this change is not relevant)

  • FAA/CAA ramp checks are now processed at midnight to avoid 'false positives' if player is just in the middle of schedule modifications.

  • Toronto City Centre airport is now limited always to sizeclass 'small' and 'medium' aircraft (building the 100% real-life "no jets" limitation is not possible though). [only for new games]

  • The previously introduced variable tax rate concept is disabled from all existing games due to issues in the transition from old system. Will be normally available in all new games.

Fixes
  • Airport info page counted aircraft in long-term storage as being active.

  • Corrected wrong tax rate change calculation.

  • Various minor display and label changes/fixes.

More minor changes and fixes

Updates
  • Added missing Hushkit class 4 upgrades to MD-80 Freighters.

  • Updated South Korea's Gwangju (RKJJ) airport to stay open and only to downgrade as secondary airport when Muan (RKJB) opens.

  • Updated Indonesia's Jakarta - Halim (WIHH) airport to stay open and only to downgrade as secondary airport when Jakarta - Soekarno-Hatta (WIII) opens.

  • Changed the minimum paid cash interest rate to 0.0% instead of 0.05%.

  • At new game world opening the airport's initial Infrastructure Class is now also defined by the airport's runway length. There are less class 1 and class 2 airports at the game start.

Fixes
  • Moving schedule to a new fleet type did not respect the A check timing, and route could overlap the A check.

  • Aircraft conversion (e.g. to a freighter) did not always automatically choose the correct / similar engine type for the new aircraft.

  • Adding an upgrade (e.g. winglets) to an aircraft did not properly update the new payload capability to route supply.

  • Added missing "select all" button to My Aircraft page in mobile view.

  • Fixed a missing mouse-over tooltip at Scheduling page for short routes when aircraft is in maintenance.

  • The Latest Aircraft Deliveries list on airline data page didn't show correctly the seller's name if the aircraft was converted (e.g. to a freighter) just before it was sold.

  • Changed statistics page subtitle "Number of route pairs" to "Number of route pairs flown (last 30 days)" for clarification.

  • A cargo-only airport did not show in all airport listing pages.

  • Added aircraft history data point for pre-existing cargo conversions at the start of a new game world.

  • The dynamic aircraft production end date for conversion models (e.g. cargo conversion) did not all register correctly for a new game world start.

  • Routes page overview chart's trendline for average load factor was counted incorrectly (was avg of 8 days instead of 7).

Changes to default route pricing

A larger technical update to the backend of the route systems of the simulation is in the works and it will be introduced gradually to maintain compatibility with existing game worlds as long as practicable.

At the first stage the route price structure and the storage of that data is being changed. One part of the price structure has been the type of the route (domestic, shorthaul, longhaul) but with the new update this distinction is being faded out.

Because of this change the 'suggested' prices for some routes will change a bit. On a general level this means that long-haul route prices will decrease a bit and domestic route prices will increase a bit. At the same time a small adjustment (due to game balance) for cargo prices is also being made.

The new values are introduced into the games gradually (0.5 - 1% changes at a time => Most likely not even noticeable due to inflation). Change is effective in all game worlds. As a result of this adjustment it is recommend to check & adjust your route prices every now and then for the next week or so.

With the new aircraft performance system we're updating the aircraft database bit-by-bit with updated performance information. Data in the new performance model is based on actual flight manuals or other similar accurate & verifiable data.

Updates
  • Saab 2000 flight model data updated (all models):
    • Climb/descent performance and all fuel usage values updated (AirwaySim Performance Model v.2).
    • Cruise speed changed to M.62.
    • Runway requirements updated.
    • Payload/Range data updated (only minor changes).
These changes are effective only in all new game worlds launched after today.

Clarifications to game rules

The following updates have been made to the game rules (in bold font). There are no changes to the "letter of the rule" from what has been in effect already previously, but the wording is now more clear and a few examples have been added. Some parts of the texts have been also removed as redundant.

Etiquette of playing
....
This etiquette applies to all aspects of the game and the service, including for example forum posts, private messaging system, airline names and descriptions and airline press releases.

Airline co-operation
....
Normal one-time sales of aircraft, including sale & leaseback deals, are naturally allowed but transferring aircraft with the only intention of at the same time generating profits/money to one airline is considered unacceptable. The purchasing airline must also have a legitimate use for the aircraft to be purchased - putting the aircraft into storage, scrapping it or letting the aircraft sit idle after it has been purchased is not a fair basis for aircraft sales (especially if combined with an exceptionally low or high purchase price).

Acting as an aircraft broker (purchasing aircraft en masse and then leasing/selling them onwards) is naturally fully allowed, and even encouraged, within the aircraft selling price limits set by the system.

Small airlines, new entrants etc.
....
In such cases the owners of the existing airlines should keep in mind that coordinated attacks, or any other uncompetitive ways, to use their power as a larger or more dominant airline to deliberately force this new entrant out of business is disallowed.
....
Competition is generally free in the simulation but any clearly unfair competition measures such as flying routes with overcapacity and deliberately targeting many/all routes of a single airline are considered unfair competition, especially if the "target" is a new / small airline.

There are no exact values on which airline can be considered small or new since it depends on the type of the game and airlines involved. The administration will determine this based on the details available. Generally airlines over one year old are already considered established and competition rules are then more relaxed.

Alliances
....
Be aware that aircraft sales within alliance members have different price limits compared to non-alliance aircraft sales (minimum/maximum allowed sale price). Alliance members must not try to circumvent these limits by for example leaving the alliance in order to be able to sell aircraft with lower/higher prices to the former alliance members.

Changes to used aircraft pricing

Updates
  • Used aircraft selling price limits have been changed (these are the highest and lowest allowed prices the player can sell his aircraft at the market). There are no longer separate price limits for alliance member and non-alliance members. The new limit for all aircraft transactions is now roughly the same as the "alliance limits" were previously.

  • These changes are effective immediately in all game worlds.

  • This change in the price rules may be reverted or relaxed in the future, depending on the circumstances. (due to this plan, and due to technical considerations the "alliance price limits" are still shown at the a/c selling page, but their values are the same as the now normal / non-alliance price limits)

  • This change has been made only because there have been problems with members & alliances who try to abuse the pricing rules, and investigating these takes considerable amount of time which is away from any real development (as of today I have again a new case related to these matters to check!). This change might cause some inconvenience, sorry about that, but unfortunately in this case I have to bring in the bigger tools.

"Classroom mode" for educational clients (& minor updates / bugfixes)

As you might know AirwaySim is being utilized as an educational software and a teaching aid by several universities worldwide. With the beginning of this semester we're offering a new simulation mode to these clients utilizing the custom educational edition of AirwaySim.

Traditionally the educational AirwaySim version has used the same continuous time mode where the simulation time moves forward 24/7 in the background, but due to requests from the customers a new classroom mode has been introduced: With this time mode the simulation time only moves forward when the instructor activates the "calculation batch" (which may be a simulated month, quarter or even a year).

This way the simulation may be used in a controlled classroom environment and students can make their management moves during the classroom session instead of playing the simulation in their spare time outside lectures.

This update does not create any visible changes to our regular / public simulations.

Other updates
  • A major technical update was made to the backend systems on route pricing storage. No visible changes to users.

Fixes
  • Corrected the IATA code for ZLLL airport.

  • Opening the user profile page at forums encountered sometimes a database error, fixed.

  • Fixed incorrect aircraft generation at the creation of a new game world (system produced some obsolete aircraft in modern era).

Minor enhancements and bugfixes

Updates
  • Enhanced the airport infrastructure expansion: The automatic expansion now triggers if the airport's traffic level is considerably higher than its infra level.

  • AI brokers are a bit smarter now when ordering new aircraft to their collections, and now take into account the age of the aircraft model in question and can't order the model if it's max 5 years past its real-life production end date.

Fixes
  • Automatic aircraft registration sometimes gave a reg.number already in use when rebasing aircraft manually.

  • Fixed incorrect airport slot status saving at route editor (might have lead to a situation where one route leg has slots while other does not, and the route is still being flown).

  • Fixed all of the reported typos (interface, events, aircraft descriptions etc.).

  • Maximum allowed daily flight frequency per destination did not count correctly at route scheduler.

  • Adjusted the description of "Empty Planes" and "Full House" achievements - these are based only on the Passenger Load Factor.

  • Easy Start wizard allocated cargo or combi aircraft to new airlines in some cases - reverted this back to 'standard' pax aircraft.

  • Manage Routes page's "Show only routes with blocked seats" selection showed incorrectly also routes with cargo transportation blocked.
