When are pilot hired?  I have been moving my routes from props to jets but some how I am overstaffed with pilots by 137%.  Will they not fill in for the new aircraft or do new pilot get hired every time I buy a new airplane?

Also, if I adjust my pilot staffing levels back to 100% will I take a big hit on my Company Image?  Thanks!!

Are those Jets Large size A/C? Coz you need different type of pilots for those Jets. Therefore, new pilots are hired but the prop pilots won't be fired automatically

You can re-train those prop pilots (medium pilots) to become large pilot to avoid firing them and get CI hit

Going from large props to large jets.

If you have auto-staffing on, it'll hire more if needed whenever you add a schedule to a plane. So if you added a lot of routes to the jets before you removed any from the props, it'll hire enough staff for both, and you'll end up overstaffed when you remove the props.

Or maybe it's because you're switching from a plane that needs a lot of pilots to one that doesn't need as many, and/or need less planes total to cover the same number of routes due to the faster speeds. Which leaves you overstaffed.

And yes, if you fire them, your CI takes a hit and that groups morale takes a hit. Best option is almost certainly to just keep paying them, since you should expand to need them all anyway.

My issue is with staffing levels when you open a new airport. I am finding that pilots etc are fine, it is the ground handling and backroom staff where the numbers go through the roof. In one case I have hired 250 people to do 44 jobs using the automatic setting.

This happened to me before when I opened a new base, and cutting staff cost my CI almost 50%. So I am not likely to do it again, but will have to go back to manual settings, until I  can redeploy.

Sami, I think this may be something worth looking at to see if there is a glitch in the recruitment for new bases.

I've found it's okay when you've one base and just growing the number of routes. I leave it on auto, and the most it gets out of kilter is 1% or so.

I then turn off auto-hire as soon as I am changing fleets or open a new base.

This way, if I'm going from larger to smaller a/c or vice versa, I retrain the, now, redundant pilots to the different class, and then hire the balance required.

And you can rebalance between bases (without making anyone redundant) and then recruit the balance of staff required too at that base.

Occasionally you end up with too many of one type of staff, but if you are basically growing you will always need more of them anyway at some point and can pick up the slack in either base. I might, doing this, end up with, say, 105% of one particular type of staff, but rarely wholesale excess staff.

I've never had to lay off staff, yet, but I've never had, say, a large, mature airline that transitions from one very large a/c to another that has less pilots or cabin crew required without any more economic route options available.

This has been a bug report that I've filed a few times. Appears that it was most recently fixed yesterday -https://www.airwaysim.com/forum/index.php/topic,54450.0.html
