[ok] Dubai Airport
« on: February 07, 2014, 03:22:44 PM »
In the last world I based in Dubai, but that seems pretty inaccurate.

Quote
Construction of the airport was ordered by the ruler of Dubai, Sheikh Rashid bin Saeed Al Maktoum, in 1959. It officially opened in 1960 with its first airfield, at which time it was able to handle aircraft the size of a Douglas DC-3 on a 1,800 m (5,906 ft) long runway made of compacted sand.

Previously, aircrafts just landed on water...

Quote
In the 1940s flying from Dubai was by flying boats operated by British Overseas Airways Corporation (BOAC)

However, in the last world that opened in 1952 Dubai airport is available and running (and has a nice and long paved runway)

Not really. The quotes are from wikipedia.

It's confirmed tho by the oficial website:
http://www.dubaiairports.ae/en/about-da/history/pages/history.aspx

RAF Sharjah, was opened way before dubai airport, but I think that was only military, and was then replaced in the 70's by Sharjah airport.

Anyway, Sharjah is a different thing.

EDIT:

Here it is:

Quote
The official opening of the new Airport took place at the hands of the Ruler on September 30, 1960 and operation commenced with Herons and Dakotas. Initially the airport was open from 0700 a.m. to 1300 p.m. local time plus the acceptance of scheduled movements outside these times. This was later increased to 0700 a.m. to 1900 p.m. local time with a further increase to 18 hours per day from April 1961, which subsequently led to continuous operation some years later.

If we'd model so that all SHJ airlines move to DXB when it opens, would be the most logical?

From what I read on Wikipedia about that it would be:

Airline HQ at RAF Sharjah before DXB;

Relocation to DXB when RAF Sharjah closes;

NO relocation when the new Sharjah Airport opens a few years later.

Umm, so first there is RAF SHJ, then DXB, and the present-day SHJ has nothing to do with anything.

...but have no info on RAF SHJ, so runway lengths, coordinates etc are required.

Before Dubai airport opened in 1960 pax transport was done via water aircraft. (source is the Wikipedia Article above)

So, maybe no Dubai airport to gameworld start or let in there to enhance fun?
