[-] ETOPS Rules
« on: December 11, 2012, 04:11:29 AM »
I think ETOPS rules should be applied in aws. It would give the game a more realistic feel. For example, Australia to South America isn't allowed with twin engined aircraft in real life, however a 767 or 777 is commonly used in aws.

Maybe this could be looked at.

Cheers

It's a bit complicated. Airlines generally get granted ETOPS ratings for twin-jets if they can prove engine reliability over a long period of time. This means that newer airlines would have to use 4 engine aircraft for the first few years on atlantic crossings, providing another advantage to any big established airline.
The issue is also not with general geographic regions like Australia-SA, but with the time-distance to the nearest landable airfield for your aircraft on one engine. AWS doesnt have every landable airfield in the world (not by a long shot), and the speeds at which aircraft travel with one engine complicate it a bit too.

777 is already ETOPS rated on those routes by the way.

But it does not mean that all 777 operators are certified for that.

So in my mind too complicated to model in regards of the gains.
