Replacing aircrafts for scheduled routes.

I would be grateful if you could inform me about, is there a practical way to replace one aircraft which is scheduled for certain routes with another one in case of the expiration of the lease?
Or do I have to close routes and keep slots and open them again for the new aircraft? In this case there would be an interruption for the flights.
