How did Jat Airways used to fly to North America?

They used to fly to Montréal, Toronto, Vancover, Chicago, Cleveland, Detroit, Los Angeles, and New York. What type of a/c did they use? According to my dad, when he flew to JFK a long time ago, he said he was on a DC something.

Why is the demand so small from Belgrade to N. America?

Partly because because it's not exact for every route-destination pair.  Like why most desinations have the exact same passenger demand between them, there's just varying 'steps' between them.  Big City to Little City == "X" demand.  Big City to Big City == "Y" Demand.  And everything in between.  Few O-D pairs have actual pax demand plugged into them.

But the primary reason is that In real life I imagine that the passengers flying, say, Belgrade to Toronto were coming from all over Eastern Europe via either connecting flights and/or other means, were collected altogether in Belgrade, and flew on a single decent sized plane.  I doubt there were that many people just in Belgrade that wanted to go to Toronto.  But pool everyone together from the surrounding few hundred miles and you've got enough to make a flight.

In this game however, every single locale has its own demand for passengers, and they can't be 'pooled' into a hub and then sent on a flight.  So, in this game, Sofia probably has demand to Toronto and Sarajevo has people wanting to to go Toronto and there's probably some in Zagreb, and whatever other major cities are in that area that I can't think of.  But there's probably not enough demand to operate a single flight to Toronto from any of them and you can't get them to come to Belgrade in the game, whereas in real-life they'd all come to a larger airport like, say, Belgrade, and fly out of there.

The same concept comes into play on the destination side.   There's demand for Belgrade to Toronto in the game, but also for the areas surrounding it seperately.  How many people on the real-life flight were actually ending their travels AT Toronto?  I bet many were continuing on to other destinations.  You can't do that in this game either, there's other demand for Belgrade to Detroit or Belgrade to Buffalo, you can't fly those people on the same cross-Atlantic flight like what happens in real-life.

JAT used to fly the DC-10.  That's the plane they flew to North America.   8)

As for how they could afford it, I'm sure some government subsidies helped quite a bit.  (I'm sure a LOT of "national airlines" had a little bit of help from the government to make some of their "signature routes" reasonable enough to fly.)

JAT also used to fly to Australia too. Back in the 80s, as there was and still is a fairly big Yugoslav expat comminuty. Back then, it was the cheapest way to get to Europe. A DC-10 was used for their Australian routes too.
