So ive been on here for about a week now im in my 3rd airline as i was getting used to how it all worked.. first two were at london gatwick then i saw an opening at my local airport leeds bradford im starting to get to the point im turning a profit, only losing money because i keep tweaking a few things. So i guess like everyone i want to expand but im pretty much at a point where i have routes on the routes that are worth going on so im looking through all the routes and the demand seems quite low to real life so i did a bit of research and on the wiki they have the passenger and movement stats.

now in the game we are in 2008, LBIA's Stats were

-- 2008   #of pass 2,873,321 Movements - 37,604

to the stats of last year

-- 2014   #of pass 3,274,474 Movements - 30,663

around 12% up in 6years. i give last years movements because there is a breakdown of the movements for 2014

20 Busiest Routes to and from Leeds Bradford Airport (2014)
Rank   Airport   Passengers handled
2013/14

1   Amsterdam   241,378      661
2   Palma de Mallorca   227,897      624
3   Málaga   227,144      622
4   Alicante   214,726      588
5   Dublin   199,590      547
6   Faro   168,737      462
7   Tenerife South   165,483      453
8   Belfast City   156,542      429
9   London Heathrow   132,325      363
10   Lanzarote   122,275      335
11   Barcelona   78,222      214
12   Dalaman   73,148      200
13   Murcia   62,269      171
14   Paris Charles de Gaulle   61,286      168
15   Fuerteventura   52,572      144
16   Düsseldorf   51,710      142
17   Kraków   49,460      136
18   Prague   45,208      124
19   Geneva   40,959      112
20   Heraklion   40,941      112

so if you take 12% from these numbers that's the estimated amount for the current year we are in for the airport im at. im not quite sure how it all works with the estimations but the numbers arent the same to real life and its quite frustrating from my point of view of trying to run an airline. also is there a way of increasing or does the demand increase year on year as per the real world?

If there's a simple answer and someone could explain that would be great. one thing i dont know is if these passengers are arrivals and departures so some would be people going an returning on a holiday for example.

The sim has nearly 3000 airports and runs from a time span of 1950 to 2030, so it is impossible to mimic the statistics or pax growth rates of all airports, and that's not even attempted.

All the pax calculations are based on real basic stats of each airport, but the intention is not to copy the figures of actual routes or operations. But that said, the figures are still realistic to some extent. So there isn't for example 200pax/day traffic to some general aviation airport in the middle of the rural area (like I remember some other [offline] airline game had when I tried it years and years back).

fair enough i totally understand the span of airports ect.

i think it was more of me figuring out how it works. do the airports have characteristics? say like the airport im based at (Leeds Bradford) the percentage of the main "trade" the majority of destinations from here are your beach holiday destinations, then there are links to hubs like heathrow, schipol and paris to connect to long haul flights and then domestic flights within uk.. mainly business routes. so as a rough guess you have 50% holiday destinations  20% to hubs 20% to city breaks and 10% domestic with 2.5% of that being business class or 1st class. or is this making it too in-depth?

I think there are specific kinds of airports. I mean, if you look at Beauvais-Prestwick, the demand is unusually high. From Beauvais, you also have rather strong demand to Ciampino or Reus. All those airports are more or less "low-cost airports". Same for business airports. Demand from London City to Antwerp-Deurne or Rotterdam is kick-ass. from my other, more mainstream airports, demand to Deurne & Rotterdam is trinkets - even though overall demand is much bigger.

And there are cultural factors. More demand to french-speaking Africa from France, more demand to Canada from the UK, more demand to Turkey from Germany, etc..... Some airports have nearly no business demand, as Reus, while Londong heathrow has a lot. Etc.....

The scenario is quite realistic for some airports but not all destinatins.. For example.. we have a 737 almost every 20 minutes from Oslo to Bergen in real life, while in game there is a demand of about 1000 pax.. which is quite ok and match the real life scenario..

how ever Oslo airport have a daily 777 flying directly Oslo-BKK while in game there is a demand of about 30 pax...
OSL-EWR, daily flight with A330 and B787, while in game.. about 50 pax demand...

So yeah, they don't always match the real life scenario... but on the other hand, most airports use connections to fill up the flights. i.e. since EK started flying from OSL to DXB they use 777 daily, but that flights is filled from BKK-DXB-OSl... HKG-DXB-OSL .. ISB-DXB-OSL and all sorts of passengers, but since the game does not support transit passengers, the demand may be correct..
