How do YOU create routes?
« on: February 11, 2013, 05:12:46 PM »
So I've been playing the game for about 2-3 weeks, and I have a question about opening new routes; I go into "open new route", put in my search criteria and then I press "route information" next to each airport, but I'm only getting mediocre pax demand at best, and mostly low (<30pax/day) routes. Is the problem that my base airport is only "middle sized"?

Thanks.

Since only mentors and contestants on BW can look into your world, it is hard to tell. But yes, the size of your chosen airport makes a difference in traffic demands elsewhere, like in real life. Thatīs why it is essential you check all possibilities of every airport before basing there.
Generally the way of finding out where to go is opening the "route planning" page, where you have an overview over all destinations/demands from your airport. This way you can plan a pattern of most demanded routes and their distances to chose the right aircraft model to fit them all to prevent you from leasing too many different aircraft models ("lean fleet"). Forget about leasing 12-seaters to serve one weekly demand for one person !
If you canīt find enough demand to be served economically, donīt hesitate searching for another base,BK and start over there.
"Open new route" should only be used if you are already certain you will serve the destination to find out about flight times and and actually to create the route.
Since you registered 12 days ago youīre playing less than two weeks. ;D  Donīt hesitate to re-read main parts of basic information on how to plan/open up routes and all provided FAQs of experienced players here in the forums.

Yes, the problem is you're in a fairly small airport. Your routes to the biggest European airports are all around 60-70 pax, with the exception of STN at 170 pax.

You do have plenty of empty, 50-70 pax routes available to fly though.

One other thing, all your flights are 6 days/week, not flying on Saturday. I assume you're leaving empty space for B-check? That's a bad idea, you don't need to do it. You need a 5 hour empty space for A-check, as it happens once a week. B check is only once a month, so you should have routes there, they're just not flown on the day B-check is done.

Yes, I was leaving the Saturday slot for B-check. I'm at the airport mainly because it did not have any time restrictions and no other based airlines.

Thank you guys for this info it really helps :)

Well, how i open routes.

usually good routes are already occupied. so, i made up this:
find routes 50-100 nm from airport, then 100-150 nm, etc. as the result i get the table below. in txt. no excel. then i print it, and when i get a new aircraft, or i am absent for 3-4 days from AWS, i get a bunch of airplnes - i know which route to open immly.
on a printed sheet i can add C and F class demand. i also cross when i take 150% demand or my competitirs do.
the figures are wednesday and friday demands.

the printed sheet later on contains different colors, marks, corrections, exclamation marks, circles from coffee and coca cola, crazy drwaings, crossings, tearings, so i dont show you them.

this is actually extract from 1992 demand, 50 NM - 7500 NM, which was not occupied. also are there more crazy persons like me doing this stuff?

Yes, there is. I personally checked every single possible route in the world from Auckland some time ago. Made an excel spreadsheet about them, including all important info, like curfews, distance, demand, ICAO codes etc..

Total amount of destinations listed was 183 :-[

I have and check lists, too. Itīs not crazy, itīs essential for optimal scheduling. Otherwise you will have to check everything all over again,if you have a fresh aircraft coming in. Especially later in game, when many slots at your or other airports are gone, picking proper flight times/destinations can be painful.

Well my thought - would not it be wonderful if such lists were produced by AWS automatically.
on the other hand - people are lazy, then i have chances to find what the other competitor did not.
(excpet for programmers - thanks to their laziness they must have made some program to extract such info)

I'm sure doing it manually is fine, but would making a program to extract route data be any different to using the auto-refresh program which was illegal?

I think as long that program isnīt directly interacting with the game itīs ok. But any program searching and setting up routes automatically certainly would be illegal.

setting - yes, i think it is illegal.
but to gather info - like this took me a week.
basis on this i could decide which MTOW to take, wheather to take over 5000 nm at all, etc. or quicly give ob in pretty congested airpport, when a cheap aic appeared on used market.

ok, let it be not program, but let AWS show unccupied routes. it may cost game money, it may be taken once a day etc in order not to abuse.

(p.s. if i had a route strategies deprtment in real life i would force them to send me this daily. and estimated profit for different routes. and estimation of future demand.)

If I want to go through in notepad and find EVERY feasible route from an airport, I reckon it'd take me maybe 6-10 hours tops. It's usually more like 2 or 3 hours on the first day of an airline to do enough research to last me 2 gameyears or more, and then another hour or so if I'm running out of routes, checking for competition, checking if routes have grown, etc.

Noted.
also - marks 80% and 90% - means that at the time of research the supply was babt 80-90% already, however it looked attractive for me. and as you guessed - the most attractive was route Charles de Gaulle - Dominica republic, whic had a lot of demand and no supply.
the remainder - did not have supply at that time.
also - the AWS program offers biggest airports first. and they are occupied first. others - insignificant, and go closer to the end of the list.
so i came to idea that it is better first to oocupy insignificant close routes, than mediocre distant (charles de gaulle - airports of egypt), because one aircraft will be able to transport more passengers earlier in the game.

You donīt have to go to the end if you change the sorting of the list.Closest first.
