What is the point of the DC-10-40?
« on: July 18, 2012, 11:41:20 PM »
The DC-10-30 has the same capacity, much longer range, and lower fuel burn. Plus, it's cheaper than the 10-40.
So why would anyone want to buy the 10-40?

The DC10-40 was designed to replace the DC10-15 mainly, and instead of using GE engines it used PW's. Nevertheless only 42 were built (20 to JL and 22 to NW).
They're called -40 because of a marketing gimmick. Originally it was going to be called -20 but NW stated that it was more advanced than the -30, so there you have the number.

In AWS there's no need for it because the -30 is so much better, but is indeed useful if you find it in the used market.

Are there 10-15s in the game?

Yep, it's more like a hot & high version of the -10. Maybe the -40 was a -10"NG", don't know.

It's not the only redundant aircraft in the game but the fact is it existed so it's here even if no one wants it. You never know, maybe the PW engines fit in better with someone's commonality.

I.E. 747, A300 and various others, same as GE engines have their commonality with other fleets (also including the named ones). That is at least in AWS, the only good reason to use it.

There's not that much of a save if you streamline engines anyway.
