Fuel is expensive. Especially when you have bigboy dc8/707 which are way to thirsty to be economical ;D

LOL, I only have 1 F28, was stuck there for while and just stumbled onto a 727-200 Adv...
so I'm not too worried about fuel yet, I'm more concerned with finding somewhere I can fly more then 2 planes that have profitable market....

I'm not going to lie I went way off the beaten path to find a non occupied airport, and its not very good, actually its really crappy but it all mine :)

It's common to see small startup airlines BK (like mine, 4x so far!) but some of these airlines going BK now are pretty large (80+ planes).
It seems almost every day an airline of significant size goes under. What's killing them? Is it fuel prices? Or does this always happen mid-game as a result of cutthroat competition / price wars / frequency carpet bombing?

It's really a dangerous mixture of poor fleet commonality, high fuel prices, and too much competition

BK airlines at this point in the game can be from many things. After a couple years of rising fuel costs, ageing airframes, increased competition, etc, there are many pitfalls that even large airlines fall into. I am sure that everyone agrees, DOTM requires patience and careful conservative planning.

It must be a combination of the above, plus the boredom factor. Right now it's difficult to expand with demand maxed-out in many places. People just give up and start again for the challenge, I think.

It's certainly not just fuel + old/thirsty aircraft.  I have 40+ DC8 and they're all making a very nice profit.  If fuel goes up another 40% or so, I might start sweating a bit... Still, it would take me around 2 years to go BK after that.  But the 757s will start arriving soon and then my competitor will really start to hurt.

If those people are still in the game, would be interesting to hear from those who BK large (50+) airlines - what really drove them to that finale...

I BK'd because of rising fuel prices making my 707's useless to me.  I had about 6 707's and 25 727's maybe...before I started losing money.  My 707's stopped earning money (including related costs) at just around $90/1000lbs i think, it was all peachy when it was closer to 60.

Its all good I'm just doing props right now from somewhere else and making more than before.  I'll be waiting to get something that burns 1/4 or 1/5 as much fuel (like a '57 or '67) before I try long haul again.

707's and a failed attempt to add A-300's lead to my bankruptcy!  Fuel killed any profit I was making with the 707's.  Thought I would place A-300's on my high demand routes only to watch my load factors disappear when I change from 2+ 727's to one A-300.  Then I could not dump the A-300's or the 707's because I did not have enough money to cancel the leases.
