Once/day a big plain or twice a smaller one?
« on: February 02, 2012, 09:57:53 PM »
Hello, everybody.
I have several routes within 900 NM range with 100-130 pass/day. I was wondering is it better to have one flight per day with a bigger plain, say 737-300 or two flights per day with a smaller aircraft like Saab 2000 or something in that range. The routes are not being served by competition so that is not an issue for the time being.
Thank you

If there is no competition, in general, 1x per day iis going to be more profitable than 2x day.

I'd say use smaller and fly 2x/3x daily. That is for 2 reasons:

1- you do not have competition at the moment but you may have competition tomorrow. You would be frustrated to fly at 35% LF when somebody with 50 seat props show up and start running 3x daily to routes where you fly 1x.

2- if there are N routes with 150 pax demand, then there are probably 2N routes with 50+ pax demand. You can squeeze your base tighter and make money from those thin routes with smaller planes. With larger plane you would never fly those routes.

F50, Dash 8-Q400, BAe ATP, ATR are all viable options for you. You can pick one of them based on your demand characteristics and availability on 2nd hand market.

I see, that makes sense in the long run. thank you. I actually have a number of routes too small for large plains but good for the medium ones you mentioned. All around 40-60 pax  :)

I often start with 30-seat EMB-120s when I have a ton of those 50-60 pax routes.
