When an inferior version of a plane is released after...

Okay, the DC 8-33 is released after the DC 8-53.  The 33 burns 2000kg more fuel per hour and has a shorter range.  Why even bother having that a/c released at this point? 

And why is the JT4 such a guzzler compared to the JT3D?

Agreed, not much logical sense.  We know why this happens -- the +/- 18 month variation on real release dates.
However, as each series is treated as a separate line in production the one, admittedly minor, point is that by ordering it you will get it quicker than if you already have ordered the 4x or 5x series.

There was a bug report about this (also with DC-8) but it seems the bug hasn't gone yet.

The long delivery time of aircraft also makes the most DC-8 versions extremely needless.
