just waiting for new stuff? What if you want to jump on several routes from a new hub. Although expensive, maybe a year or just be patient?

My competitor has 60 of them. He's still buying them, and he's #2 largest airline in the game.
No replacement for displacement

The should be ok if used properly with fuel prices where they are now. Watch them if it rises past $300-$350/1000kgs.

the 727-adv is a good plane, but they require an extra pilot versus the 737-400, so at some point it is good to phase them out, like I am starting to do now!
