Fuel Efficiency Of Props
« on: August 23, 2011, 07:47:29 PM »
I was looking for a good propellor aircraft, and I went through and did some number crunching for fuel economies.  I used the metric Kilograms of fuel per seat hour.  The results were rather surprising:

40-50 Seats
AN-140        10.95 Kg/SH
Dash 8-200  12.25 Kg/SH
ATR 42-320  11.25 Kg/SH
Dash 8-300  10.00 Kg/SH

60-70 Seats
IL-114         12.50 Kg/SH
ATR 72-200  9.00 Kg/SH
BAe ATP      7.64 Kg/SH

All of these aircraft have similar cruising speeds (Mach .4 to Mach .45) so the Kg/SH should be a pretty good metric of overall fuel efficiency.

I was surprised at the ATP's performance.  It beats the ATR 72 by a mile!  Also, the AN-140 is not a bad option, compared to the other aircraft in its class.  I didn't do the Saab 2000 just because it is so much faster and would destroy the metric.

why didn't you go for extra credit and calculate kg/seat*mile so you didn't have to leave saab out? :D then you could've multiplied that by expected fuel price and ticket price on a specific route to see which airplane fits that route better. then do this for other possible routes from your base and found the ultimate plane. of course you'd have to factor in lease price and maintenance but they are easier to factor in once you add how many daily (i.e. weekly, monthly and yearly) flights you expect from that route.

mine on dotm2 showed that fokker was the best bet for me :D

I have to stop thinking this much about this game :).

WAY too lazy.   ;D ;D

I was working on a C++ program that would crunch the numbers for me, but then the whole "Add-on" thing came about and I figured that any computer help might be toeing the line.

I was also trying to get it to tell me which routes to drop and which to keep (by plugging in the HTML source of each route's page).

Dont forget not all props are created equal. The ATR can hold 74 pax in the same config as an ATP.
