Prop Replacements
« on: May 15, 2011, 06:03:37 PM »
I'm mulling over my strategy, and I have a fleet of AW.650s  These are old already (17-20yrs).

I don't know what to replace them with.  They seat 68, and have a range of 1000nm.  Since I'm in Hawaii, the range doesn't matter that much, since I'm only going to use it inter-island.   They are also Medium aircraft, so I want to replace them with a medium aircraft, to avoid laying off pilots.  I want something in the 50-75 pax region that doesn't burn much fuel, but also meets the criteria above.

I was thinking of a F.28 3/4000 or a Dash-7.

What do you recommend?

Random prop aircraft if you have competition. Bigger things like B727/B737/A300 if the demand is big enough and there's no competition.

The BAe ATP would be perfect but that won't launch in 5 years.

BAC 1-11 475

(burns double the fuel per hour, but flies at almost double the speed)

There's no need for speed if he is based at Honolulu. The routes to the other islands are short enough for props and BAC-1-11 can't reach the West Coast.

So go for props if you just want something for the islands (as I said, random prop, F27 for example) or go for something bagger that can reach the West Coast etc. in higher MTOW if an extra fleet categorie isn't this interesting for you.

On the contrary, higher speed will allow him to operate the same amount of flights with less planes, and the faster flight will give him higher LFs than his competitors

Speed is no big advantage on those short routes (<500nm). Speed is also a very small indicator for LF.

Disadvantages are the extreme higher fuel consumption and, in case of BAC-1-11, the short range.

Speaking of turboprops, are there any of them that will get launched soon? The first Dash-8 is too small (smaller than 40 pax) I guess, so is ATR-42. ATP would be good but it is 5 years away and I do not know how much improvement it has over HS 748. When do CASA planes come? Are they profitable? ATR-72 and Saab 2000 seem to be too far away.

Any other turboprops that will come soon which are profitable?
