What to replace my DC-10's with?
« on: March 08, 2011, 06:51:18 AM »
I am looking to replace my small fleet of DC-10 and was wondering what would be the best a/c with similar range/seating capacity but a more fuel efficient option?

In the real world it is either the A330/340 or the B7673/777

DC-10s should be replaced with either 767-400ER or A330-300. Both aircraft have similar range and seating of the DC-10. I would avoid the B777 unless you can actually BUY the aircraft. If you lease it, compare the cost of the B777 and the A330. Is the price worth those extra 5-10 seats.

If you plan to operate any other type of 767, then going with the 767-400ER will have the same commonality.

If you plan to operate A340's, then A330 will also have the same commonality.

B767-400ER is just a tad slower but has a 10% better fuel economy and requires 3 less cabin crew than A330.  My vote is for B767-400ER.

MD-11 is a really convenient transition, but it doesn't save much in terms of cost.

B767-400ER has 30 min better turn-around (pretty much negates the MD-11 slight speed advantage), requires 3 less cabin crew and burns 40% less fuel than the MD-11.  Not to mention production has ended on the MD-11.

Again, my vote is for the B767-400ER.

I think A343X is better than B764ER

I guess it depends upon your point of view.  The A343X is 10kt faster and carries 14 more pax.  On the other hand, it requires 3 more cabin crew, burns 3,800 lbs/hr more fuel, has 2 additional engines to maintain and ... oh yeah, costs $31,000 more than a B767-400ER.

Better?  Not from where I'm standing.

Yes, i really like the B767-400ER as well. But some people might want to go with A330-300 if you plan to have A330-200/A340's later on. A330-200 can do some nice medium to long haul med sized markets. B767-200/300ER really should NOT be used for long haul. Not enough seats.

I think both are decent aircraft. I used to use the 767-400ER for my transatlantic flights, they are a cash cow. But I figured I'd go with airbus this game around.

Yes, definitely no need to mix A330 and B767 fleets.  But I think the B767-400ER (not the smaller variants) will do everything the A330/340 will do, and do it considerably cheaper.

I think this is the best idea. The 767-400 is exactly the perfect replacement and a twin engine aircraft requires less maintenance than a 3 engine. To me, with a few exceptions, the MD-11 is just a glorified DC-10 (although touted ostensibly as whole different plane. Thats just my opinion though). ;)

No not really. It looks cool, but the 767-400 has much better stats.

Another reason I decided to go with A330-300 this game around is because i can go with a smaller aircraft(A330-200) or a larger aircraft(A340-600) and still keep commonality. Essentially I can keep commonality for pax numbers from low of 258 to 325(in standard config)

It was a VERY tough decision for me since I always used the 767-400ER and loved it.

But with the 767-400ER I can't go with a larger aircraft and keep commonality(You have to go with B777 or B747). And If I go smaller, the 767-200ER is a money loser. The 767-300ER is okayish if you don't go beyond 4000NM. I can keep commonality with the 767 series for pax numbers from low of 210 to 284(in standard config)

A330-300

as I said before -A330-300 or 200 depends on where you gonna fly . A perfect option  ;D
