Small airline Test- comments
« on: December 18, 2010, 03:36:10 PM »
This thread will be for comments about Swiftus' experiment with a small airline. I thought a separate thread would be in order so it'll be easier to read Swiftus' comments.

I think it's a great idea that Swiftus is going to blog about creating and running a small airline. I'm anxiously going to wait for any new comments from him  8). Perhaps we should also start guessing, how long he will stay afloat  :-[. Despite Swiftus being one of the most experienced players here, this is no doubt going to be a tough challenge even for him. So I wish him a good luck, and dominate the game  ;)!

Yes, I will dominate with my pithy fleet of mosquitoes!

Thanks for making this thread.  It will help unclutter the "diary"

swiftus, i think you don't have to set your ticket to 15% below default.

my load factors are awful.  I need to do something to get people into the seats.

While I am asleep tonight, my whole fleet will be flying.  Let's see if they can make enough revenue to cover my fixed costs.  If they can not, this will clearly show how impossible it is to play a small airline.

Set default to -5% and once RI reaches above 30, LF% will stabilize. CI needs to be at or near 30 and RI 75+ before you can charge higher without major LF drop.

I suspect with the low income value, a fleet of 15 or more is needed to turn a break-even profit (leases factored in). Suggest rapid expansion then stop and let things settle for 3-4 months. From there you can move with a stable income.

This is just off the top of my head...

Ok. It is an experiment. This experiment will show is it worth to cut the price for LF on small plane.

also shows staff formulas need to be a lot different for a small airline.
Many also pay their staff much less what is currently required by AWS.

The new airline starting at your base running DC-9-50s is going to add to the challenge.

Basically the DC and Fairchilds are meant for different class of route, it won't affect much.

Have you seen the routes they are flying on? I beg to differ.

If the DC9 is used to fly ~20 pax route, it is not economical at all and the airline doing that should not exist in this game.
If the Fairchild is used to fly ~100 pax route, it is meaningless to design the Fairchild.

Three examples. The demand easily supports a DC-9 and the competitor may fly there as they expand.

I even highlighted the routes with the competitor for you. Many other routes have over 100 demand on route planning.

Compare the route maps of the two airlines (and remember one was only founded today).

Please at least bother to look at the airline before making outlandish statements.

Before I assumed you weren't even in the game world, and then you would have had some excuse. But I see you have an airline in DOTM.

Yes I didn't check at it as I never expect the Fairchild to fly any routes with good demand. It is just like flying thousand of CRJ out of Heathrow and as I said, meaningless.

There are just too few other options on where to fly these 6 planes...  I am getting good LFs, though.

1) When there is competition, frequency always win especially short distance flight -> the DC9 won't affect you much.
2) When you add more frequency, you are paying more for the slots -> this add to your expenses and since you are testing the possibility of small airline it might be not economical. But since you don't have many option, just go for it...

Since you've got good LF %, you could increase your price to default.  Although I doubt that 5% is going to save all your workers from the unemployment line.  Especially this close to Christmas....there's going to be some sad kids  ;)

Have you considered corporate sponsorship or drug smuggling to help raise revenue?
