I have started to use your technique ;)
My workaround is to rename the 7 a/c I am working with so that they come on top, such as 000AA through 000AF.
Re: Renaming (ability to do it quickly) - See my 2nd feature request I posted.

I should stop posting my strategies and hints everywhere ;)
My "workaround" is to edit the shown aircraft from 30 to 25, 20, 15 etc. and press every time F5 to see if it fits. If the new schedule stands at the top, I go ahead with scheduling ;)
But most times I watch movies on the second monitor, so there is no need to hurry ;D
