Fleet Commonality!! (Just an advise!)
DenisG:
Yep, since Saab2000 is so fast, you are able to outfly most other props in similar seat sizes, by adding routes. A plane makes not money when it is in the air, but when it takes off! Smaller than most regional jets, it draws pax due to preference of smaller a/c as well. Compared to the DHC-8-400Q, the Saab was available some 10 years earlier. You can build an entire airlines only based on Saab flying almost all routes in central Europe (e.g. Paris).

Hi people.
I know everyone says it, about the fleet commonality.. But i really got shocked with this:
I had a fleet of 16 Saab2000, 5 EMB-120 and 2 ERJ-170 (3 more on the way)
Then i decided to get rid of my EMB-120...
I looked the Fleet commonality before geting rid of them, and i got this:
Embraer 170/175/190/195
Number of aircraft in fleet 2
Total 570 918 USD
Embraer EMB-120
Number of aircraft in fleet 5
Total 449 763 USD
Saab 2000
Number of aircraft in fleet 16
Total 1 021 530 USD
then, AFTER i get rid of my loved EMB-120 (i really like flying them on real life)
Embraer 170/175/190/195
Number of aircraft in fleet 2
Total 309 822 USD
Saab 2000
Number of aircraft in fleet 16
Total 549 627 USD
Almost 50% of both costs!!!
So those who are trying to make a regional airline work, don't use more than 2 fleet types!!! only 1 would be the perfect situation, but unfortunatelly it's difficult to find one family that feets in various seats categories, not like the Saab 2000... There is the ERJ-145, but i think it's more expensive than the S2000, and also is from another family of A/C.. so doesn't matter
I'm having similar problems with this. Used to operate only domestic routes with a couple of short regional routes to China and South Korea. The backbone of my fleets are made of B717-200 (operates 28 of those) and 4 A320-200 for longer routes. It was so profitable, especially the B717-200 since I operate in big number, my average maint. expense per plane (not including engines) was only around $ 70K.
Then I made a really stupid mistake. Tempted by the high pax on the LAX route, I decided to try long distance route. As a start, I brought 2 A330-300. Now, suddenly, the avg. maint. expense for my B717-200 jumps to $ 133K. Not sure on how the A330 could have impacted the B717 though.... this means that my maintenance fee cost almost double than before and my income is really slowing down now.....
So yes, I agree with you on this one. If possible, just stick to one or two types of planes.
Maarten Otto:
240 tubes in the air and just recently added a 6th type. From 3 to 4 and 4 to 5 types the maintenance expanses sky rocket, but for the 5th to the 6th they don't.
