Spotted the game date...
« on: May 27, 2010, 10:09:04 PM »
Well, I see ATB has hit "that" date.

Now I'm just waiting for the raft of bankruptcies hoping I'm not one of them.

How much is demand going to drop? Any guesses? Here's to hoping fuel plunges too...

In my first game (Euro Challenge #2) demand dropped ~20-35%.

In ATB until now the drop isn't that huge I think.

No noticeable effect on my airline yet.

Demand changes only monthly, so you'll notice the change in October.

However, from previous games experience, I never thought the effect was particularly great.  And the rebound occurs fairly rapidly, so unless you're sitting on no cash at all, chances are you'll do alright.

$1.1M in cash (4-plane fleet, with one more on the way), 2nd place out of 4 in my hub and marginally profitable, despite still being a new airline with low CI and low RIs.

Still no sign of recession. 9/11 moved me from being a marginally profitable airline to a ... marginally profitable airline.

I'm looking forward, however, to 7 years of unending fuel price rises. That should thin out the playing field some, I'm guessing.

Like I said, the whole thing is largely overblown in-game.

In reality,  most airlines operate at VERY thin margins with planes operating at 75-85%LF at best.  Routes are highly-competitive and you can't just combat a pax loss by opening up some underserved routes, because there really aren't any.  So when traffic falls, even a little, pretty much every lost passenger goes straight to the bottom line as a loss.

In AWS margins tend to be so high that few people notice if they lose a little bit.  And even if they did they just open up some routes to underserved destinations and, voila, instantly the "recession" is over.
