large fleets and even bigger new orders
« on: May 18, 2010, 07:48:54 PM »
There are couple of big airlines with order list of 200-300 airplanes. Pan Global at JFK has 200 planes and another 300 on order - while the slots are almost gone by now... Similarly, Dutch Airlines with 90 planes in the fleet in Amsterdam is ordering another 300 (!) - while the slots for pick hours again are gone. What are those guys going to do with those planes - start a leasing business?

Quite possibly. They may be replacements for older aircraft, they may be part of an effort to streamline their fleet commonality. I haven't looked at the orders myself but they're just a handful of reasons why so many might be on order.

300 new with 200 existing and no slots... still don't get it, you would replace the whole fleet and still have another 100 spare ones:)
It thats some kind of replacement, that it would mean that tons of used planes are likely to hit the market in the near future as the "giants" freshen up their fleets - should take the prices down significantly, I'd like to see that :D

I'm one of those guys, but in ATB, and yes it is for 2nd, 3rd, and 4th bases. 86 in fleet and 214 on order.

Besides, a lot of those aircraft will serve as replacement for older, used aircraft.

Will the number of slots really increase?

Yes, the number of slots available at every airport increases every year.  For most airports it's about 1 slot per hour per year.  So a total of 24 new flights can be added every year.  It adds up in a hurry -- especially if your deliveries are 4-5 years out -- there can be 100 new flights by then.  You can throw used planes on those as they open up, then replace them with your new deliveries when you get them.
