727 replacement?
« on: August 07, 2009, 08:42:42 PM »
hi guys, i run a fleet of fairly old 727's (between 14 -18 years old) and whilst they have been good workhorses i need a replacement pretty soon as they are just hemorrhaging dollars on maintenance and fuel. They are in Y only 168 configuration and the capacity is ideal, i just need a similar plane capacity wise but is far more lighter on costs.

Now the 737-800 springs to mind but its a few years off yet, and the 737-400 will soon be old as well, apart from them two are they any other non russian aircraft that would make an ideal replacement?

EDIT, Suppose the 757 would work, forgot about that.

The 757 was the replacement for the 727

Depending on what kind of routes you operate the 757 might not be an ideal replacement. I would have gone for the 737-400 if you're in a rush, or waited for the 737-800 if you're not. The 757 hav got to long turnround times to be an ideal replacement on shorter routes(under 2000NM).

Just my 10 cents...

The 727 is fine as it is......I'd say wait for the -800 if you really hate the 727. The costs aren't that much compared to the Russian planes.  :P

Gotta add this, sometimes the best planes aren't always the best to operate. The costs of leasing/buying them end up being more of a hassle than to buy the ones with mid-fuel consumption.

I've given it a bit of a thought, il let the leases run out on the 727's and replace them with fokker 100's which i have lots on order until the 737-800 comes available. All the routes are under 600nm anyways and i will double up on routes because of the capacity drop. This means i will keep the fleet at 2 types, 767 and fokker 100 saving the airline a few pennies.

Why don't you consider A320 family? I am using this approach (replacing my old B727 by A320 and A319).

Im doing as above.

A321's for the heavy routes and a319's for the thinner routes, probs throw some 320's in the mix in a few game years
